Math Update Week 3

Hello all!

We are tackling Topic 2 this week, which covers addition strategies. A test will be held early next week!

Here is an overview, with a few practice problems for kids to do over the long weekend if you choose!

Topic 2.1:
Adding 0, 1, and 2 onto numbers.

  1.  3+0=
  2.  4+2=
  3.  7+1=
  4. Owen has 6 pencils. He picks up 2 more. How many pencils does he have now?
Topic 2.2:
Doubles: Adding the same number together.
  1. 7+7=
  2. 2+2=
  3. 5+5=
  4. Heather has 9 animals. She doubles the amount of animals she has. How many does she have now?
  5. Is 8+10 a double? Why or why not, explain!
Topic 2.3
Near Doubles: Two numbers added together that are one away from each other. (Hint: use doubles to help you!)
  1. 7+6=
  2. 5+6=
  3. 2+3=
  4. Ashley has 9 skittles. She eats 8 more. How many did she eat?
Topic 2.4
Addition problems are the same forward and backward.
  1. Is 2+5 the same as 5+2? What is the answer?
  2. 6+9 and 9+6 =?
Topic 2.5
Number Strings! Remember our look fors: ways to make 10, doubles, or near doubles. Find those first and you're set!
  1. 8+2+6=
  2. 4+9+4=
  3. 3+2+5=
Topic 2.6
Making 10 to add. What are all the combinations we can make to add 10? Remember, we can break numbers into nice numbers and make a number string with a 10's fact!
  1. 8+4=? (Hint: break 4 apart into 2+2, and you will have a 10's fact!)
  2. 6+9=?
Students now have 3 solid strategies they can use when solving problems to help them get to their answer! We have been practicing relying on these in class!
  • Doubles
  • Near Doubles
  • Make a 10
Thanks for taking the time to read this!
