This week in 2nd grade... point of view, time, poetry

Hello all! The countdown is on until 3rd grade in Room 335! I still say every day, I am blown away by the fact this year is almost over! We have some awesome things happening this week!

Upcoming Events

Monday, May 1: Monday Meeting in Gym
Friday, May 5: Runge/Central Dairy Field Trip (see below)
Friday, May 5: 3rd Grade Fun Run
Tuesday, May 9: Gentry Choir Performance

Runge Field Trip

We are super excited to take a trip to Runge this Friday! This will be an all day field trip, with us leaving when school starts and returning around 2:15. We will be spending our morning at Runge, eating lunch, then heading over to Central Dairy (a Ms. Lister FAVE) for a sweet treat!

Our class is currently short-handed on volunteers for this trip. If you are able to volunteer your time, even just the morning (until around 12/12:30) please let me know.

3rd Grade Fun Run

There is still time to attend the fun run on Friday! The cost will be $5 at the "door" and the course will go through the Thornbrook subdivision. This is 3rd grade's service learning project. They are raising money for Make A Wish!

Our week this week...

Point of View

To go along with our poetry unit, we will be focusing on Point of View during our shared reading time this week. We will be working hard to identify what point of view a story is being told from, and using that knowledge to help us write point of view stories and poems.

Time

Our time unit will finish up this week. I encourage you to work with your student at home on telling time (to the 5 minute). We are great at identifying the time, but also working on terms such as "quarter till, half past, quarter after" and "_____ minutes before/after ___ o'clock" and seem to be struggling to understand the terms and their use. We will continue to work on telling time and identifying time in those terms in class as well!

Poetry

We are working on poetry in writing after finishing up our opinion unit. We are creating poetry books that will be published and sent home before the end of the year! It has been awesome, even just in the two days we've been doing poetry, to see how creative these kids can be! They are such amazing writers and SO incredibly creative. I cannot wait to see the poems they create this week :).

That's all for this week! If you have any questions, email me at klister@cpsk12.org or on Remind! Again, if you are able to volunteer Friday, it would be greatly appreciated!

Here are some photos from last week!

This week in 2nd grade... theme, measurement, opinion writing, Service Learning

Upcoming Events

Monday, April 17: Pledge Money DUE
Wednesday, April 19: Service Learning Celebration (Begins at 11:30, will conclude around 1:30)
Monday, April 24: MAP testing (third through fifth grades)

Service Learning

Thank you so much to everyone who pledge money for our Math-A-Thon. We are so excited to announce final numbers and are watching our total rise as more money come in.

Remember: This Wednesday, the 19th, we will have our final part of our service learning. This will include a Brown Bag Lunch and silent auction, as well as a presentation including singing, announcing the top mathematicians, and revealing our final total! A green information sheet went home last week detailing the afternoon. We hope to see you there!

Now on to our week...

Following suit with last week, we will finish up theme and measurement this week. We will also be testing over opinion writing towards the end of the week. This week marks our wrapping up of our writing curriculum, meaning we have the last few weeks of school to learn about poetry! Knowing how creative each of these kiddos are, I am sure we will have some awesome poems to share!

Catching Up:

We have quite a few papers that have missed going home over the past few weeks. I am going to do my best to get these home ASAP, and apologize for any confusion this may have caused!

We have a busy week ahead with deadlines, due dates, and lots of fun! As always, please let me know if you have any questions! klister@cpsk12.org

Math-A-Thon

WOW! We had some awesome, amazing mathematicians in our class yesterday. Congratulations to all the students for working SO hard and doing SO well! We celebrated with some cookies and juice. Here's a few quick notes about pledges.

First, if you have not yet pledged, THERE IS STILL TIME! Just send back the green sheet that went home last night with your contribution. You can choose to do an amount per problem, or a flat rate if that is easiest.

Next, if you are worried about the amount you pledged, please feel free to just give as you are able.I realize it was hard to determine how much was "enough" and how much was "too much"!

Finally, cash or check is accepted. See below for check details!

Make Checks Payable to: Beulah Ralph PTA

In the memo write: 2nd grade service learning

Thanks for all your help! We are off to an amazing start. Also, for the presentation next week, please feel free to invite friends/family to come watch and bid on baskets! We have some amazing items up for auction!

Please continue to practice fast facts (basic, single digit addition facts) at home with your children to prepare them for Tuesday! After the tournament is over, we will be contacting pledges to collect money.

The second part of our service learning project is April 19. Parents are encouraged to come. Please continue to watch for information to come home.

Science Center Field Trip

We had a blast at the STL Science Center. See below for pictures.

Reading

This week in reading we will continue working to find the theme or the message of a story. We are doing such an AMAZING job finding theme!

Math

We are continuing measurement in math this week. We will learn about centimeters, meters, and comparing measurements. We have also talked about inches previously as well as estimated lengths.

Writing

We are continuing our monster piece in writing. Next week will be our testing week for opinion writing. We are doing an awesome job forming and writing about our opinions

Email Tuesday 4/4

Find the email I sent on 4/4 regarding important information for the week.

Hi Parents,
Lots of important information! This email takes place of our weekly blog post!

Tie Dye:
*We are tie dying today. Thank you for all your support in sending shirts!

*We will be wearing our shirts to the Science Center and the Runge Center in May.

Field Trip on Friday:
*We will be wearing our tie-dye shirts to the field trip.  These will come home Thursday night and will already be washed and ready to go. Please make sure your child comes dressed in the shirt on Friday morning. This is how we will ensure our group stays together!

*If you signed up to bring a lunch please write your name on the outside to make it easier to pass out.

*Students need to ride the bus to the field trip, but parents may sign their own child out afterwards and drive them home themselves. Please make sure you sign out before leaving for my sanity J

*Our bus is pulling out of the parking lot at 7:30am.  Unfortunately we cannot wait for students who are late, or we will not have enough time to explore the center. Please plan to have your child at school between 7:00-7:20 to allow for enough bathroom time. There will not be someone here to open the doors before 7 am, though.

*Electronics are allowed for the bus ride.  Students are responsible for their own items, though. We will leave them on the bus while in the center.

*If you are volunteering for this field trip (Thank you!!), you will receive an agenda for the day, Science Center map, and the students in your group on Friday morning. I will also have directions for you already printed out!

Service Learning Project:
*We are collecting the Math-a-thon pledges on Friday, April 7th (just leave it in their backpack and we will get to it after the field trip). Please let me know if you need an additional pledge sheet.

*We have been practicing our math facts daily using Rocket Math. We are taking our math fact test for our “Math-a-thon for Hurricane Matthew” on Tuesday, April 11th.   This is only for students. We will score these as quickly as possible and let you know the scores.  We will then send emails out to everyone on the pledge sheet letting them know how the child they pledged for did!  Cash and (most likely) checks will be accepted.  We will let you know who to make the checks out to once we get to that point.

*Thank you so much for the silent auction items.  Please continue to send in items :O)

*Students wrote to several businesses and have heard back from Sparky’s and Flat Branch!!!  Sparky’s gave us 5 $20 gift cards, and Flat Branch donated a $50 gift card!  We are still working on responses from the other businesses.

*We will send you more information about April 19th once we have everything planned out.  Here is what we have so far: At 11:30, the doors to the gym will open for you to come look at and bid on our silent auction baskets.  At 11:50, students will join us for a “Picnic in the gym.”  Feel free to bring lawn chairs, blankets, and even a special lunch for your child!  You may continue to bid on baskets at this time.  You will also get a chance to look at business letters students wrote, listen to a few kiddos speak about helping others, and hear who the top mathematicians were in each class.   It should be a fun event!

I think that’s it.  :O)
Thanks so much! Let me know if you have any questions
